A group of about a dozen activists hosted an information session about the Women’s March at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Sunday.
“It’s a series of educational workshops designed to connect and build community and take action. It’s as a platform for women to come together, talk, cry, organize and take action,” said Maggie Armendariz, one of the organizers of the event.
Among those participating in the workshops were executive board member of the local chapter of the Women’s March on Washington and an organizer of the Los Angeles and Seattle marches, and local musician Colleen Bork.
Armandariz said this is one of the first events of this type hosted by the congregation, a place that prides itself on inclusiveness.
“Everyone is welcome to come. We have no politics or religious affiliation. We welcome people from all walks of life, of any gender,” said Armendariz. Volunteer information sessions With about 200 people attending, this week’s workshops are a way for people who want to learn more to find a resource and get connected with the local movement.
The first of the two will be held Tuesday, March 7 at the YWCA in Long Beach from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This event is for adults and will consist of eight one-hour workshops with topics that will include planning, fundraising, messaging, security and more.
The second event will be held at the Woman’s Building on Wednesday, March 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
There, participants will have a chance to learn about the work of organizing and how they can get involved with the Long Beach event.
A march will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 at Alamitos Bay Beach.
This year, “Our Revolution LA,” the local chapter of Our Revolution — a Bernie Sanders-inspired organization focused on progressive issues — is bringing together political and environmental leaders for an action at the Convention Center.
